Gmail Account Recovery- Reset Your Forgotten Password

Password is the key to privacy and once it is lost, the urge to recover it arises. Also, to maintain privacy, you must be aware of the hackers who keep looking for their next prey. So to prevent yourself from getting into the trap it is always recommended to keep updating your passwords regularly. But what if you have reset the password recently and it is no more there in your memory. If it is about Gmail, no need to worry as Google provides different ways to recover the secret key.
There are multiple scenarios where different reset processes are applied to recover Gmail password as explained below:
Scenario-1 If you have a phone number or alternate email address linked to your account.
Google’s Account Recovery page provides all the steps to recover the password. You must have a phone number or secondary email address linked to your Gmail account and after that, follow the steps listed below:
- There you need to click on the link ‘I forgot my Google password’.
- On the Account Recovery screen, enter your complete Gmail address and click ‘Next’.
- You will be asked to enter any of the recovery information such as your phone number or email address where you will receive a verification code.
- You will receive a verification code on your phone or email address depending on what information you have entered.
- Enter the code in the space provided and after verifying, create a new password for your account and confirm it.
Scenario-2 If you have no recovery information such as phone number or email address.
This can be somewhat critical than the previous one and the only source to get the login information of your Gmail account is by checking the browser’ history that you use to access the account. If the history has your email account information stored, you are good to go, if not, alas, nothing can be done now.
Scenario-3 If your Gmail account was created when Google supported security questions.
Good news for those who are still using their old Gmail accounts containing security questions. Gmail password recovery can also be done by answering the security questions you have selected while creating the account.
But Google no longer supports security questions and they are not deleting the existing ones as well. Therefore, now you cannot add or change a security question except for deleting them. The questions were not that much secure as they were thought of and a simple guess was enough to get into someone’s account, hence this recovery method was discarded.
So now you know if you will be able to recover the account or not. To successfully complete Google’s Account Recovery process, you must have a close hint of your last password, access to the verification code received on phone number or alternate email address.
Secure your Gmail Account
Instead of performing the time-consuming recovery process, you must try to not get into such a tricky situation in the first place. This can be done by doing all that it takes to secure your Gmail account.
- Most importantly, you must add a phone number and a secondary email address to your account. This will make the entire recovery process easy breezy whenever you forgot the password.
- Gmail doesn’t support security questions as hackers were able to crack them easily. So even if you still have those questions as a way of accessing, delete them as they are no more secure now.
- You must also consider checking which devices last accessed your account and from where from the Google account’s settings page. If anything looks suspicious, you must immediately change the password.
- On the same page, you can also activate 2-step verification for your Gmail account to make it more secure.
